Looked After Children (LAC)

LAC graph

The term ‘looked after’ refers to children who are in the care of the local authority under a voluntary arrangement, or who are accommodated by the local authority under compulsory measures decided by a children’s hearing or a court. The number of looked after children (LAC) in Oldham has been growing in recent years.

Looked after children (LAC) are known to have poorer health and education outcomes than children who are not in local authority care. Statutory guidance therefore advises that the needs of the LAC population should be identified systematically through the JSNA process.

A health needs assessment for LAC in Oldham is currently being carried out. It is due to be published in early 2019.
